The New Edener - Helping you succeed in EVE

This is not whining…

Well, maybe it is…

I don’t know…

See, Eve was my first one of these games, so I don’t know what WoW was like or what the pros and cons were or why everybody seems to think eve is better.

Here’s what I do know…  I’ve played EvE enough to “get it”.   When I frst started in my Batam in Empire Space, moving all the way up to an actual Cruiser, I was amazed at the level of support I received from other people in the help channel.

One memorable moment was when they suggested I get a Destroyer to salvage behind me but I couldn’t afford a Destroyer — 2 separate people sent me enough ISK to pay for 4 destroyers.   I tried to give it back… they said no.   Give it to someone who needs it once you get established.

And so I have.   I’ve even taken to helping out one Rookie per day in the Rookie Help channel — as painful as that is to monitor.

Along the way, I’ve lost ships to NPC, I’ve lost ships to players in 0.0… hell, I’ve even lost ships to my own corp members on training drills… lol.

Tonight, though, for the second time, I suffered something I could really not understand the motivation behind.

I found a wormhole.   Early this morning.   I left it alone outside of establishing it had at least 3 Sleeper Spots inside and about 9 or 10 other “anamolies”.

I waited until my friends were online and then decided to go exploring.   Only to find the wormhole on the other side camped and I was podded before I knew it.

Looking at the combat logs, I think they may have made 250 K from me.   vs. 25 -60 M from the sleepers — much less the gates that led to other more profitable areas.

3 of you at a gatecamp, that you setup cuz you’re scared to go inside the deeper layers of the wormhole — I get that.

But to sabotage anyone coming in who might be able to help you not look like such a tool in being so cowardice as to not even pursue the sleepers… I can have no respect… Sleepers are not rollover NPC’s — by the time the 4th wave hits, you’ll want all the help you can get, I would have thought.

If anyone can explain this mindset, I’d appreciate it because I always consider it us against them inside WH.

    “Hi Hon”

    “Hi, what’d you do today?”

“Got the promotion to marketing manager… what’d you do today?”

    I killed a guy for 25 K when I could’ve gone for the big play and gotten 60 M…. I rock, huh?

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here, please know that while I’m new to EVE (just over 2mths) I’m not new to mmo’s. So I’ve seen all kinds of people, and I’m no expert. :p I understand that EVE is your first and only mmo and that you’ve played enough “to get it.” Sometimes, oh heck, allot of times there is no why, why did this guy kill me? Why did my order get outbid? Why did this other guy give me the shirt off his/her back?

The multitudes of personalities and levels of social microcosms, from people of all walks of life is staggering. One literally never knows for certain what the human on the other side the server farm connected by masses of wires and microchips will do.

Which is why after playing Dark Age of Camelot, WoW, Tabula Rasa, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Age of Conan, and Warhammer, that I really find EVE Online a breath of fresh air. While some of these games integrated human conflict, I find that it is much more prevalent in EVE. And it is done WELL, yes not perfect but what mmo ever is? The human element is what draws me in, is ever changing, entertaining, frustrating torrent of emotions that fuels my addiction.

Its not personal, its just serious business. The other pilots considered the WH their area regardless of the fact that you may of found it first. While certainly you were handed the feces end of the stick, might unfortunately made right in this case. Perhaps next time you’ll take it back with a fleet of stalwart mates or you’ll meet your next bosom buddies to invite you to their WH fleet. Until then, I wish you, good hunting friend.

You bring up some interesting points, and I will concede that given the human element, we can never predict what may happen. And as you have mentioned, perhaps that is one of the things that makes Eve so remarkably, fascinatingly playable for hours on end…

On the other hand, and not just coming from the normal bitterness of losing a ship — it was a Heron, after all… what was the point? They made nothing, they gained nothing, I didn’t really lose much outside of a hitch in the overall enjoyment of the game…. so I do have to wonder about the logic and motivations of those involved.

I guess it does come down to the multitudes of personalities… because I’ll be online before most tomorrow — and I’ll probably find a WH before most tomorrow — and whether or not it has Sleepers, Salvage sites, or whatever, the last thing I will do, regardless, is to get a bunch of my friends to camp the entrance. IMHO, the game offers so much more in terms of payback vs time to even consider it.

I see your point, but I’m curious how you got podded so quickly, by a player force? If I understand correctly, the Sleepers are pretty difficult to crack, so a large force is necessary. How big was the army of campers??? Eve seems like a simple enough game to me. Yes, I know it’s extremely complex, and I love it, but so is life. You can break the complex systems down to a few different principles. Call me old fashioned, but why don’t you go in with more guys, and a bigger ship? Teach the pirates to gate-camp elsewhere. Perhaps I’m being too simple here :)

TheRenix, just remember you don’t know the entire story. Maybe those guys had a corp mining op or a POS deployment going on behind that wormhole. So then they switch to NBSI (Not Blue Shoot It)It is not that they wanted to ruin your day, it is just that it is easier to eliminate everything/everybody that comes through that wormhole that isn’t blue. If you already had dealt with that corp/alliance and had standings then this wouldn’t have happened.

Those guys camping that entry point could have been protecting valuable assets behind them. If they give you time to talk and check your scanner and you see 5 hulks on scan you might just come back with a larger tougher fleet to mess with their day. A gate is not a place to negotiate.

Now they might very well be the kind of person who enjoys screwing with people as well, there certainly are enough of those on the interwebz but, don’t forget to look at this from the other side. And if you say “Well, if I was deploying a POS I wouldn’t have worried about one ship entering the system.” Well, if you are saying that, let me know when/where you are deploying your next POS and I will drop by and pay you a visit. :)

Perhaps these few managed to find a way to enjoy simple pleasures.

    @Jim Luc

Yes it was a fairly large group — targeted me before I could cloak and scrammed me before I could get some distance.

And you’re right, I’m obviously taking a risk by singlehandedly going against the sleepers. I have an alt scout who does the scanning, once he finds the complex, he directs my main in. My main is the one who does the fighting and can usually tank the first 2 waves without a problem (I’ve not yet encountered a force of sleepers greater than 3 at once, so I could be in for a big surprise one day - but again, that’s what the scout’s for.) The 3rd wave is where it gets tricky, but with a tractor beam and a salvager, I’ve usually managed to get ahold of several million in loot, so that’s when I disappear.

I guess my problem is one of perception — because I don’t have a big group to travel with (we’re a small corp and not everyone shares my passion for exploring or fighting Sleepers) so it’s just me and with me fighting the sleepers, I’ve always considered the threat in WH space to come from Sleepers and not other players.

So my naive illusions on that point were certainly corrected.

    @Rieger

Reiger — excellent points. As I alluded to in my reply to Jim Luc, I suffered from a myopic perception as to what might motivate someone to take out an unarmed ship.

Having spoken with one of them after the attack, I DID get the impression that they were merely doing it because they could. While my playing style doesn’t see the logic in that, obviously more aggressive, combatant players whose focus is on killboards vs. ISK making are well within their rights to pursue that line of gameplay as well. Just as Adrestos pointed out.

And you’re certainly correct in mentioning that there could’ve been anything going on in there. Maybe they just wanted to keep it for themselves — maybe there was a POS being setup… so point taken there.

All good comments — thanks to everyone for helping shift my perception somewhat. And if anyone feels like fleeting up to increase my odds next time, let me know!

    Thanks.

I would do it if I could, because at the end of the day, a kill is a kill.

Might seem harsh, but that’s just EVE.

Eve is the Wild West in 0.0 If you happen upon a band of Indians who just like to scalp for the sake of scalping, there’s not much you can do about it. It was the risk of going alone into uncharted territory. Because the risk is great, you get a bigger reward. You don’t need to split any profits. You just lose the money required to upgrade your clone again, and any ship and loot lost. From a business standpoint, the risk/rewards outweigh going in with an army.

Or, you can get yourself a Titan. Can you take a Titan into a wormhole? Are there any other ships more powerful than a Titan? If it’s money and time, I guess that would be my goal. To get a Titan and then explore 0.0 by myself. If any pirates want to mess with me, swat them out of the air :P

    @ TheRenix

I will fleet up with you. My lacking of skills will be able to get you in and out of that wormhole.
