EVE Blog Banter #8

Welcome to the eighth installment of the EVE Blog Banter , the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here . Check out otherEVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month’s topic comes to us from me, Ga’len at The Wandering Druid of Tranquility.  He asks: “What new game mechanic or mechanics would you like to see created and brought into the EVE Online universe and how would this be incorporated into the current game universe?  Be specific and give details, this is not meant to be a ‘nerf this, boost my game play’ post like we see on the EVE forums.”

Well, this is the Edener’s very first EVE Blog Banter. We plan on participating every month from this point forward! Click read more to read the entire article.

First off, I’d like to say hats off to Ga’len @ The Wandering Druid of Tranquility for an excellent topic! Secondly, I would like to thank CrazyKinux for allowing the Edener to participate in this excellent blog topic!

Anyway, to the content!

EVE Online is a very different game, in that it requires a lot of thinking. Politics play a large role, as they generate player based content. I would love to see EVE stick to this mantra of realism in adding a stock market-esque function to the game.

The shares have been there for a while, but really, there isn’t a whole lot to the mechanism.

The market could be seeded with the basic NPC corporations, and eventually, incorporate player based corporations into the frey as well. A new interface would be used, similar to the market interface, listing the various corporations, their current value, number of shares, etc. etc.

Corporate wealth would be calculated either using the corporate wallet or a measure of assets, not entirely sure on this one.

With the new feature would come a variety of new skills to affect the players ability to manipulate the market, much like those already in place for buy / sell orders.

All of this would eventually tie into the political aspect of the game, as publicly operated companies would be required to please their shareholders. Of course, the decision to operate publicly would be left to the CEO and directors of the corporation, but the ability to do so could open a number of RP opportunities as well as opportunities to expand.

Personally, I think a stock market would have a lot to add to the game. The biggest factor is the realism, currently corporations are really funded entirely by its members, with this feature, corporations could rely on a new method of generating ISK, and ultimately, a path to success.

Hmm, interesting one this. I seem to remember Dr. Eyjo talking about complex financial systems (player run insurance, bonds, share trading and such) at some point in the past, possibly at a fanfest, I forget where.

As to NPC corp shares being made available on the market, I’m not sure how this would work. Shareholders generally have some sort of say in the running of a corporation, how would NPC corps deal with this aspect? The boards of NPC corps would have to be programmed to make random errors of judgement in order for them to be competitive with the player run corps, too close to general AI to be feasible I think.

Also, all publicly offered corporations would have to publish accounts, and revealing the accounts of the NPC corps (which CCP may or may not use to regulate the economy to some extent) may reveal too much information to the players and allow us to exploit that information to the detriment of the game as a whole.

This kind of idea throws up an awful lot of questions, and addresses a very complex issue. Better to let such mechanisms develope organically and see what happens rather than have them hard coded into the game I think.

I think this would be great. It would really add to the depth the player has. Just think of the possibilitys! A stock market collapse would be amazing!

I really like this idea. I think that the ability to play the market would be a great addition. I would probably limit to player corporations. As far as pricing goes, it would have to work like the real market. When a corporation goes public, they give up some control of their corporation in exchange for money. After that, shareholders would have the ability to vote their shares on major changes in corporate structure, issuing more shares, joining/leaving alliances, and possibly even oust management.

Shares could pay dividends that would come from corporate coffers, and players could conceivably engineer a hostile takeover of a company by buying up a controlling portion of its shares.

I love this idea, and it would open up huge numbers of new play styles: robber baron, arbitrageur, etc.

    Bring it on CCP!

By the way, please come see my somewhat less grand idea at http://journeytoneweden.blogspot.com.

That’s an idea that’s so good, we thought of it, too! :-) (Or, rather, Cain did, as we were discussing the Blog Banter on voice; I just took his idea and ran with it to produce the Blog Banter text.)

Some have suggested that, with no “government” to enforce “laws,” a proper financial market couldn’t exist. Well, there might be ways around that…

    @Erbo Evans

Sorry! I didn’t actually get a chance to read all of the banters yet, didn’t mean to take your topic :P

I don’t think regulation would be a problem to be honest. Some restrictions would have to be hard coded into the game, of course, but politics should keep everything in check. It would be a big feature, and would probably take quite a long time to develop, but I think it would greatly expand the EVE universe. New careers and new play styles, never a bad thing!

A proper market structure within EVE is something a lot of us have been looking forward to for a long time. I’m convinced we’ll eventually get there.
